Periodontal Disease Treatment in Fishers

When you have a problem with your gums, you need gum infection treatment to eliminate bacteria that causes infection. Board certified by the American Academy of Periodontology, Dr. Andreina Vitto, offers several treatment options depending on the severity of your problem. Dr. Vitto starts with the least invasive nonsurgical options. In more serious cases, periodontal surgery may be required.

Nonsurgical Periodontal Disease Treatment

Your first line of defense is a gum infection treatment called “scaling and root planing.” We use an ultrasonic cleaning device to remove plaque and tartar from places on your teeth where regular cleaning can't reach: below the gumline, on the tooth itself and around the root. We smooth the rough surfaces of the teeth to provide a healthy, clean surface that allows gum tissue to reattach. By addressing gum disease early, scaling and root planing may be the only treatment you need.

Surgical Periodontal Disease Treatment Options

When tissue or bone surrounding your teeth is too damaged, we may use one of several surgical procedures to prevent further damage and restore a healthy smile. We will recommend the procedure that is best suited to your needs. The most common types of gum infection treatment include:

Pocket Depth Reduction

When you mouth is healthy, your teeth are firmly surrounded by gum tissue and securely supported by your jawbones. Periodontal disease damages these tissues, leaving open spaces called pockets around your teeth. It is easier for bacteria to collect inside the pockets, leading to more damage over time. The supportive structure degrades to the point where your tooth falls out or needs to be removed.

The pocket reduction procedure is known as “flap surgery.” We remove the bacteria, hardened plaque and tartar that have collected. We may also remove tissue that is too damaged to survive. Once the tooth and root are free of bacteria, plaque and tartar and the pockets are reduced, restored gums can reattach to your teeth.

During regeneration, we fold back the gum tissue and removing the bacteria, plaque and tartar. We may then perform a bone graft to stimulate new bone growth or apply a special kind of protein that stimulates tissue growth to repair the damaged areas destroyed by periodontal disease.

Soft-Tissue Graft

Gum recession (also called gingival recession or simply receding gums) is a frequent sign of gum disease. Roots are revealed as gums recede, making teeth appear longer and creating sensitivity to hot or cold liquids or food. Receding gums expose teeth to greater damage from gum disease by allowing bacteria, plaque and tartar to attack the teeth and its roots. During a soft-tissue graft, we add tissue from the top of your mouth or another source to cover roots and restore the gumline to its original, healthy position. We may also perform this procedure for cosmetic reasons such as an overly “toothy” smile.
